Chapter 10

THE WORDS WERE OUT of my mouth before I realised what I’d actually said.

Steve shook his head. “What the hell are you talking about?”

I closed my eyes, taking a deep breath.

“Natalie?”

“Oh, ignore me. I’m just being stupid.”

“Tell me, please.”

“I was just meaning... well, from what the cops said, Ryan had vanished and they suspected foul play. If the people responsible think I know something, like Ryan’s wife and the police did, then maybe they will hurt Peter if they suspect he’s hiding us.”

He eyed me suspiciously. “And that’s everything?”

I shrugged. “What else could there be?”

“I don’t know, but I have a feeling you’re hiding something from me.”

“I’m not. Don’t be silly.”

“So, what are we going to do? We need to contact somebody about Peter.” He got to his feet and began pacing the length of the room behind the sofa.

“You think I’m right?”

He screwed his face to the side, chewing the inside of his mouth. “I didn’t say that. However, we were pushed off the road by a grey van. The reason could be something else entirely, though. But I agree. The incidents could be related.”

“Thank goodness for that.”

“I think we should ring the detective who came to the house. Tell him what’s gone on since his visit and leave it to him to investigate.”

“What if he’s corrupt?” I cried.

“Come off it, Nat. You’re talking nonsense.”

It was pointless. He already thought I was crackers, and that was without me telling him about the dream. I needed to tell him everything and pray he could think about a solution.

“Sit down,” I said, patting the sofa.

He groaned. “Why don’t I like the sound of this?”

I waited until he was seated beside me and reached for his hand. “Now, before you make your mind up and have me carted off to the nut house, I need you to listen to me.”

He narrowed his gaze. “Go on.”

“Well, you know how I’ve been writing my new book.”

“Yeah, yeah. Get on with it, will you.”

“Okay, the main character, Ryan, is a journalist, and he’s investigating sexual assault allegations made by a handful of girls who’d spent time in a children’s home.”

“Okay.”

“The main girl confided in her mother a couple of years after it happened, but, although they involved the police, no charges were laid. That’s where Ryan came in. The girl convinced a couple of the other girls to give their version of events, but they suddenly changed their statements. Ryan thinks their abusers got to them.”

Steve rubbed his face with both hands. “Where are you going with this, Nat? It’s an interesting story alright, but it is just that—a story.”

“What if I told you it’s true? That Ryan Coultard was as real as you and me.”

“So you did know about him. Did you see him on the news? Were you aware of that when you began to write?”

I shook my head. “I’d never heard of him.”

“Then how?”

“This is the bit you’ll have problems with.” I braced myself for his reaction. “I thought Ryan was just a fictional character.
